Volumetric flow technologies are the largest segment of the market and have been available for the longest period of time. But by combining with other measurements (density being one of them) in the process and through the use of advanced electronics in their transmitters, many of these meters can calculate actual or standard volume flow to the same conditions temperature.. By doing that, you are essentially making a “mass” measurement, but in volume.
Industries such as the Oil and Gas have established well defined standards through the American Petroleum Institute (API) on how to convert volume flow measurement at actual process conditions to standard conditions of 60°F Therefore when they measure a barrel, it means the same thing around the world. So many times a volume measurement is made – then converted to a “standard” volume or mass measurement.
The clear advantage of using a Coriolis meter is that you get a direct mass and density measurement so if you desire a “standard” volume measurement you already have the mass measurement and if you do really want a true volume measurement a Coriolis meter can produce that as well by taking the measured mass / measured density thus producing a volume measurement.
